PRIVATE YOGA INSTRUCTION

While group yoga classes are truly valuable and a great opportunity to meet other like-minded people, there are many benefits to private instruction.  Most of our teachers are available for private instruction, either at the studio or in your home or office.

Getting Started

To get started with private instruction, please send us an email or call us at 347.762.9642 and let us know:

  1. where you’d like to receive the instruction (our studio or your home/office)

  2. the day(s)/times you’re hoping to have sessions

  3. if you have any specific health concerns or limitations, or goals that you’d like to work toward

  4. if there is a specific instructor that you’d like to work with

After we receive your email, we’ll contact you to discuss logistics and rates (which vary by instructor), as well as answer any other questions that you might have.

What kind of students take private yoga lessons? Why don’t they just take group classes?

Many people choose to practice yoga privately, including:

  1. business professionals who don’t have time to attend group classes and need the convenience of having an instructor come to them in their home or office

  2. students who attend group classes but want to refine their form and alignment, develop a home-based practice, or learn ways to more skillfully navigate the postures that they find difficult in class

  3. celebrities and other high-profile individuals who prefer more privacy than what is offered in the group class setting

  4. students with specific health or other concerns who need more attention than is possible in a group class

  5. elderly folks who want to go at a slower pace, learn how adapt the more challenging postures and exercises, and work within their comfort zone to develop strength, flexibility and balance

Benefits of Private Instruction

  1. the instruction is more personalized, leading to more skillful and efficient progress

  2. specific postures and sequences can be chosen that address your unique musculo-skeletal imbalances, with an aim toward cultivating more balance in your body

  3. modifications and alternatives are offered for postures that are more challenging for your particular body type, strength & flexibility

  4. the pace and intensity of the practice can be adapted to your needs and goals

  5. some like a vigorous and athletic practice

  6. some prefer a mellow practice with an emphasis on stress reduction

  7. some like to stop and start, ask questions, and spend more time on just a handful of postures

  8. you can receive support and guidance around developing a personalized home practice

  9. you can develop a deeper and more meaningful student/teacher relationship

Left: Jason is helping a student with Urdhva Dhanurasana (Upward Facing Bow). By placing blocks under the feet, more length can be created in the lumbar spine, reducing the likelihood of lumbar disc compression. This can be especially helpful for students with tight hip flexors (at the front of the pelvis)
If a student has tight shoulders or forearm flexor muscles, blocks under the hands would make this pose more possible.

Why Choose Us for Private Instruction?

There are a lot of yoga studios in NYC, and thousands of yoga teachers to choose from.  Here are a couple things that we feel set us apart from the competition:

  1. Our Teachers: our teachers have received a solid education in musculo-skeletal anatomy, injury awareness & prevention, and the anatomy of yoga asana

  2. most teacher training programs in the U.S. follow the guidelines set by Yoga Alliance, which only require 10-20 hours of anatomy education to become a certified yoga teacher

  3. all of our instructors must successfully complete the Anatomy Studies for Yoga Teachers course created by Jason Brown, which is an academic, comprehensive program consisting of 108+ contact hours of instruction designed to raise the bar for yoga teacher education in America

  4. Our Practice: our style of yoga is contemporary, versatile and informed by principles of sound exercise science, and versatile

  5. A Contemporary Practice: Zenyasa® was created to meet the needs of Western students in this current day and age, and as such incorporates functional strength training exercises and work with therabands in order to create a more balanced practice (from a strength/flexibility perspective)

  6. A Versatile Practice: Zenyasa® classes a structured around five elemental class themes, each of which has a different strengthen/stretch focus; this makes it easy to adapt the practice to your specific needs; need to focus on lower body strength? let’s do the Earth practice; need to focus on building core strength? let’s do the Fire practice; etc.

  7. Informed by Exercise Science: Zenyasa® follows many of the same principles found in modern fitness, such as i) strengthening both the “pushing” and the “pulling” muscles equally, ii) strengthening what you stretch, and stretching what you strengthen, and iii) systematically alternating which muscle groups are being worked in order to better promote muscle growth and recovery, as well as reduce the potential for repetitive strain injury
