PART I: BONES, JOINTS & COMMON INJURIES
(36 Contact Hours)

This course is comprehensive and academic in nature, and
covers:

  1. basic kinesiology concepts, such as terms of position and
direction, terms of movement, the planes and axes of
movement, true movement vs. “going along for the ride,”
and the concept of reverse actions

  2. the names and locations of all the major bones in the body,
along with the important landmarks of each bone

  3. soft tissue anatomy, with an emphasis on skeletal and
connective tissues such as bone tissue, ligaments, cartilage,
    intervertebral discs and menisci

  4. the major joints in the body, including their functional and
structural classification, the movements they allow, and their
    ligamentous and/or disc structures

  5. the common injuries that may occur at the knee, ankle,
shoulder, wrist and spinal joints, and strategies for their
prevention (both on and off the yoga mat)

Prerequisites: None

Required Book:  Kinesiology: The Skeletal System & Muscle
Function
, by Joseph Muscolino

Notes on Part 1 (Skeletal System) and Part II (Muscular System

  1. Parts I & II are academic in nature... it'll feel like you're in college
as there are reading assignments, quizzes and a final exam. But
don’t stress... the in-class quizzes and final exam are drawn from
    questions on the take-home tests.

  2. Occasional reference will be made between the material being
studied and it’s relevance to yoga asana practice; however, no
prior knowledge of yoga is required as all references to yoga will
be clearly explained, and inferences can easily be extrapolated to
    other movement/fitness modalities

  3. Furthermore, the main goal of Part I & II is to learn the bones and
muscles and acquire confidence in your knowledge of
    musculoskeletal anatomy.
